At least four Lauderdale County men face charges in connection with the deaths of two men found in a burned car in south Kemper County on Wednesday.
The two men are believed to be Xavier Monroe, 20, of 201 Lynn Lane, Apt. 7, and Preston Smith, 21, of 1220 Louisville St., Apt. 14, who have been missing since Oct. 29 and were known to be driving to Meridian in a black 2005 Kia Spectra that day.
Authorities have not positively identified the bodies of the two men as Monroe and Smith and are awaiting results of autopsies at the Mississippi Crime Lab, officials say. Monroe and Smith were reported as missing on Oct. 31.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie told reporters from Meridian television station WTOK-TV Channel 11 that one of the suspects in the deaths of the two men led them to the burned out car in Kemper County.
Currently, Larry J., 19, is facing a capital murder charge, while three other suspects — Jarrod C......, Lumontus S...... and Dennis S....., who are all 21 — are to be charged as accessories to murder after the fact.
Sollie also told the television reporters that he believes the two men were killed by gunshots on Jackson Military Road in Lauderdale County.
A search for a murder weapon is under way, Sollie said.
Authorities do believe the burned out car — which is a Kia — was left in the remote wooded area of Kemper County where it was discovered around the same time Monroe and Smith were to have been in Meridian on Oct. 29.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is probing the deaths and the Starkville Police Department, Oktibbeha, Kemper and Lauderdale county sheriff’s departments are assisting with the investigation.
